'Oholei Beach & Hina Cave
Location: Southwestern coast of Tongatapu, approximately 10km from Nuku'alofa.
'Oholei Beach is one of the most beautiful and dramatic beaches on Tongatapu — a secluded stretch of white sand tucked beneath limestone cliffs on the southwestern coast of the island, facing the open Pacific. The beach is known for its spectacular sunsets, crystal-clear water, and the impressive sea cave, Hina Cave, which opens directly onto the beach.
Hina Cave is steeped in Tongan legend. According to oral tradition, the beautiful maiden Hina — a figure who appears throughout Polynesian mythology — frequented the caves along this stretch of sacred coastline, known as Tu'alikutapu (the Sacred/Taboo Coast). The cave is part of the same network as 'Anahulu Cave on the eastern coast.
'Oholei Beach is also the location of the Oholei Beach Resort, which hosts the iconic Tongan cultural feast and traditional dance performance (fiafia night) — one of the most popular cultural experiences for visitors to Tonga. Guests dine on an umu-cooked feast served on banana leaf platters while watching traditional Tongan dancing and music performed by local performers. Booking in advance is strongly recommended.
Tips: Combine 'Oholei Beach with a visit to nearby Pangaimotu Island or the blowholes for a full day on the western side of the island. The fiafia dinner is best booked through your tour operator.
